Project Title : ‘Climate Champion Program – SAKHI’
Duration : June 2023 - Dec 2025
Intervention area :Nawada, Bihar

Climate Champion Program – SAKHI is a community-led initiative designed to strengthen maternal and child nutrition in rural communities of Aspirational District, Nawada, Bihar. The programme focuses on empowering women as key agents of change by building their knowledge, leadership, and capacity to promote healthy nutrition and climate-resilient practices at the household and community levels. Through awareness sessions, household visits, nutrition gardens, and practical demonstrations, the initiative encourages families to adopt diversified diets and improved caregiving practices. By combining community participation, local food solutions, and stronger linkages with government health and nutrition services, the programme aims to create sustainable pathways to improved nutrition and wellbeing for women and children

Background
Initial field assessments revealed that malnutrition in the region was not only linked to food scarcity but also to limited awareness, behavioural practices, inadequate service utilisation, and low community engagement. Although several government schemes such as nutrition and maternal health programmes exist, their benefits often fail to reach families effectively at the household level. Recognizing this gap, the programme focused on strengthening community participation and empowering women to become agents of change in improving nutrition outcomes.

Vision

Our vision is to build resilient rural communities where women and families are empowered with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to ensure sustainable maternal and child nutrition. By strengthening awareness and encouraging healthy nutrition practices at the household level, the initiative aims to create an environment where every mother and child has access to adequate and nutritious food for healthy growth and development.
The programme envisions community-driven change where women emerge as leaders and champions of nutrition within their villages. Through locally available solutions, collective action, and stronger linkages with public health and nutrition services, communities can sustainably address malnutrition and create a healthier future for the next generation.
